Internet Explorer 7 Released

After many betas and a release candidate, Microsoft has released Internet Explorer 7 today. I IE7 is a step in the right direction, but its no where near it should be. I have not checked my sites for issues yet in the new version. I will probably download it this week and start the tedious process of checking for rendering bugs. In a perfect world…everyone would use Firefox or all browsers would be standards compliant.

If you are using IE7, give me your feedback. I would like to know your opinion on it.

I don’t think they heard me.

IE 7 is worlds better than IE 6 on almost every level …. and on par with FireFox 1.5 in many ways … FireFox and IE7 both have their pluses and minus, but on average I’d say they’re nearly even now…. I might even give IE7 the edge, except I suspect they’ll get stagnant and complacent again soon enough, wile FireFox keeps leaping ahead with FF 2.0 and FF 3.0 over the next 18 months. Also, I’m experiencing a really annoying error with IE7, which I’ll explain in a minute…

The big strength of of IE 7 over FireFox 1.5 is the same strength IE 6 had over FireFox 0.1-1.5, only more so — it loads up faster and freezes less often (you know how FireFox can get buggy when a ton of tabs are being opened at once, when trying to open pages with PDFs, and sometimes when opening pages with long scripts, etc.). And FireFox still has the same basic leg up on IE 7 as it did against IE6 — FireFox is far more customizable, focused on being a great and simple browser and not a great OS-epicenter-thingy like IE, and the FF interface takes up less screen real estate and is also pleasantly easy to customize. Plus, once you get addicted to certain FireFox extensions and plug-ins and search options, it’s hard to go back.

We’ll see how things go with FireFox 2 …. if it opens a little faster, freezes less, and looks just a little bit slicker with just a couple of key bells and whistles/extensions built in, it’ll trounce IE 7, I’d think.

Also, I’m mixed on IE7’s much hyped Phishing Filter — I don’t tend to click on spammy links and phishing/scam emails always seem painfully obvious to me — and so far my normal browsing habits haven’t brought me to any pages that the Phishing Filter dislikes. That is to say: If it’s not catching anything, do I need it on all the time? Because I could be wrong, but it does seem to be slowing down the load-up time of some web pages significantly….

Here’s my BIGGEST problem with IE7 — but it might just be me, because I haven’t been able to find any complaints or solutions about this online: After installing IE7 Beta 3, all of a sudden I could no longer see Flash content that’s embedded in a page using a normal Embed tag (as opposed to an Object tag)….. When I come across something like a Myspace slide-show, for instance, all that IE7 shows is a little broken-image icon…. (Example: there’s a slide-show halfway down this page: http://myspace.com/BackStageEast)

I figured that with the installation of the official release version of IE7 and a total cleaning of my cache and a re-installation of the latest Flash player, everything would start working again — but no such luck. Everything looks fine on FireFox, though…. go figure!

I’m an independent musician who uses myspace, and now I can’t post any new music or alter the music that on my profile. I can still change my profile using other browsers. But IE7 screws it up no matter how I change my settings. Just goes to show how Microsoft “hears” its customers.
