iPhone: No 3rd-party apps
The first miss for Apple’s new iPhone is not allowing 3rd-party apps on the device. I can live with this for now, but I would hope that eventually Apple will open the iPhone up to developers.

I agree, but I think they’ll open up before long. As it stands now, It’s going to be hard to wait for a Version 2 of this phone. I wonder what kind of spinoff phones we’ll see–iPhone mini perhaps (no camera, different color options)? I’d also like to see a slider build in that hid a Blackberry-esque keyboard.

Actually, that’s probably a misreading of what Jobs actually said. Talking about the software, he said:
“It doesn’t mean we have to write it all, but it means it has to be more of a controlled environment.”
I think that this is a pretty clear statement that there WILL be third party apps, but that Apple will need to approve them… for a product like the iPhone, I think this is a good compromise, so long as the approval process is not too arduous. While we do need third party apps, we certainly don’t need the number that there are for Macs, and we don’t need the bugs that come with more than a few of them either. While I don’t think the network-crashing scenario he mentioned is quite realistic, I for one don’t want my phone crashing when I need to make a call… One of the reasons why I haven’t bought one of the current smartphones.
I hope that is the case.
