Smo – the New Cousin of SEO

Posted by admin On July - 31 - 2009

The concept of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) has created another of its cousin of the same fray – Social Media Optimization or popularly called SMO. Quite congruent to the SEO process, SMO involves making sure that a website is popular and easily link-able to different media resources like blogs, social bookmarking websites and other media sharing websites. The whole purpose of SMO is to popularize the website in the social circles of the internet and make netizens aware of it.

SEO and SMO, inspite of having their share of differences are quite similar. However, their roles are not interchangeable. Both the concepts are best used in complement to each other. Thus it becomes very important to know and understand the crucial characteristics of each and how and when to use them.

Similarities of SEO and SMO

Here are some common objectives of both Search Engine Optimizations and Social Media Optimization

Link AbilityLinkability determines how linakable your website is in cyberspace i.e. how many people would like to link to your website. If they do not have reason enough to link to your website, then there is no good reason why they should visit you. After all a bad website is as good as no website.

However, do not confuse Linkability with Link bait. Both are two different things. Link bait is the content that you may have on your website to which other sites link automatically because they like it, without your asking. On the other hand linkability is how appealing you can make your website to the members of cyberspace. It depends on content quality, website design and its usability.

Both SEO and SMO strive to increase the linkability factor of a website.

Quality ContentThis is a natural consequence of the linkability factor. Good content not only increases the linkability of a website but also gives visitors a reason to come back. And as repeat visitors increase, the credibility of the website goes up.

Pull MarketingPull marketing is a tad different from the regular marketing attempts. Quite unlike the latter, the former aims to attract visitors by exhibiting to them the potential value of the website and what they can gain through it. Obviously it scores above and is more effective than blatant advertisement of the website.

Differences of SEO and SMO

Here are the areas of difference of both the SEO and SMO processes:

Channels of ProcessSEO is the process of popularizing the website on major search engines like Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft etc. Thus it follows the principal guidelines dictated by search engines only. SMO, as the name suggests again is all about making the website popular in social circles or media sources of the internet like blogs, forums, online communities, bookmarking websites etc.

Target UsersSEO target users who have something particular in mind. That is because people using search engine have an intention and wish to acquire more information about the same. However, SMO has a wider target audience that mostly consists of savvy net users who don’t mind looking through a good piece of content.

ObjectivesSEO try to sell products or services while SMO aims to build a community of like minded users.

Podcasting for Learning and Sales Enablement

Posted by admin On July - 31 - 2009

Copywrite 2006 Tim Keelan, StoryQuest Inc.

What do Duke University, IBM, Capital One, Newsweek and Barenaked Ladies all have in common?

Answer: they are all reaching out to staff, students, and customers with a new and powerful tool – podcasting. You may have heard about podcasting from your kids or on the news, but podcasting is much more than some phenomenon started by the rock and roll or techy crowd. Podcasting is a powerful communication tool being used to reach global and mobile audiences, save people time and, most importantly, really connect with their audiences in news ways – in today’s communication/message glut. But let’s take a look at what podcasting is, who is using and why it is so effective for both business and individuals.

First, we’ll look at the size and scale of the podcasting phenomenon…

– A recent study by the Pew Internet and American Life Project found that more than 22 million American adults own Ipods or and MP3 player and 29% of them have downloaded podcasts or listened to podcast that have been “pushed” to them. That equates to 6 million people listening to podcasts. Market researchers and analysts continue to buoy up podcasting’s future with latest figures suggesting a US audience alone of 56 million by 2010.

– Jupiter Research recently predicted that US digital music player sales would grow to 56 million by 2010, up from 16.2 million in 2004 and by 2010, three-quarters of all people who own portable digital music players will listen to podcasts, a growth from less than 15% last year.

What is podcasting?

Whether you describe it as the greatest communication tool since email, or as an RSS feed for audio, podcasting is a way to “push” audio content to subscribers for virtually zero cost. Podcasting allows anyone (me, you, IBM, or NBC) to post audio content that gets pushed to any subscriber’s desktop and then directly to their iPod or MP3 player. This is global. Anyone, anywhere can “tune in” to your podcast and learn what you have to offer or say. You don’t need to be NBC with a global distribution infrastructure. Now people can “subscribe” to a podcast and have new content “pushed” out to them without them having to surf the web, download MP3s or burn CD’s.

Ideas/Stories/Voices -to- Audio/MP3’s -to- Internet -to- PC -to- MP3 players

Notice: all the arrows go in one direction! Once someone has subscribe to your podcast, your content get “pushed” out to them. There is no turning in to stations with podcasting. You don’t have to visit a website to find streaming podcasting. Podcasts show up (pushed) when new content is produced. If you are a subscriber, you get the podcast right then. All you need is an Ipod or MP3 player of any kind for listening, thus the word podcasting.

The term “Podcasting” is derived from the iPod (Apple Computer’s popular device for playing compressed audio files) and “broadcasting.” Podcasting allows for audio files that would have been previously downloaded and played on a personal computer to be automatically downloaded and listened to on portable music playing devices (such as the iPod and other MP3 players).

Having originated in the world of blogging, some have even referred to podcasting as “audio blogging.” For many, podcasting is a logical next step from blogging. As Business Week Senior Writer Stephen Baker observes, “The heart of the podcasting movement is in the world of blogs, those millions of personal Web pages that have become a global sensation. In a blogosphere that has grown largely on the written word, podcasts add a soundtrack.”

Now that you know what a podcast is, let’s look at where they come from: who is producing the “pushed audio content.”

Who is producing podcasts?

The answer is wide ranging. Teenagers, techies and rock musicians were early adopters. Today you see the likes of Rush Limbaugh, Business Week, ESPN and news programs of all types producing, distribution and marketing podcasts. The number of podcasts available is growing at a very rapid pace. In late 2004, there were close to 500 podcasts available. Today there are over 10,000 different podcasts to choose from.

Now that podcasting has becoming more mainstream, corporate and non-corporate organizations are getting into the act, using podcasting to connect with customers, students, staff and partners. Here are some examples:

– Duke University handed out iPods to their entire 2005 freshman class so they could receive podcasts that included university news, class work and social content.

– Capital One University has handed out over 3000 iPods to support corporate training and communications. This includes, leadership training, sales, customer service and other topics.

– IBM has created podcasts to show their thought leadership to customers investors and prospects.

– Keane Inc. has handed out over 100 ipods to their global sales force to share training, customers’ stories and organizational content.

Why have these and other organizations gotten into podcasting? They have gotten into it because they know their audience (whether internal or external) is inundated with text-based content: emails, articles, the web portals, and marketing messages. Podcasting allows them a unique medium to reach and connect with their audience.

iPods will be part of Duke University’s new Duke Digital Initiative (DDI). “We’ve been focusing on iPods and other mobile computing, but our wider goal is to integrate technology broadly into the teaching and learning process,” said Peter Lange, Peter Lange, the university’s provost and senior academic officer. “The iPods have helped jump-start this process, and we plan to keep pushing ahead.”

Listeners love podcasting because it delivers rich content directly to them, in a form that allows them to save time, control what they hear and listen to while commuting, working or whenever it works for them. No longer is learning tied to a book, PC screen or web portal.

Content is still king in any communication, especially recorded podcasts. Podcasting is the delivery tool. Compelling content ensures continuous listening and not a flip of the power switch or turn of the dial.

Should you podcast?

Podcasting is not answer to all your learning and communication problems. As great as audio is, like any medium, it has its limits. While audio allows users to multi task, it is not easily scanned – which means you consider the listeners needs very carefully. You must provide value.

Corporate podcasting is different that individuals or media podcasting. The standard for a corporate podcast is much higher than for individual or media. Your staff and customers expect certain from your communication with them. You can’t just offer long-winded rants, self serving commercials or cute content. It is all about value. When producing that value, ask yourself; who and how will you produce your podcast? Who will review it and how? Will you get it transcribed? There are legal issues to consider as well.

Despite these issues podcasting can be simple. Once you have determined your format and established a process the whole process gets much easier. Still podcasting takes a proactive effort, a planned approach, creative development and the courage to try new things. But if you have the courage, and are willing to put the front-end work into it podcasting and mobile audio can provide huge benefits. If you would like to:

– Reach a global audience
– Connect with that audience in a new and effective ways
– Save your audience time
– Share the passion, experience and stories of your business

…try podcasting – it works!

Blogs are online journals where people express themselves through writing. Writing is the process by which one puts the words of a language on a format that others can read. Writing has only been a day in the year that humanity has existed. Talking and thinking are much easier than writing. These processes just out naturally like a river of consciousness, just sometimes, we have to do.

Is Twitter Useful for Vision Mapping

Posted by admin On July - 31 - 2009

Twitter has taken the internet with a storm, everywhere you look, everywhere you search everyone is sending twits and is twittering. The question is, is this worth the time and effort to get involved in? The answer to this question is, yes.

 l. Twitter is a free social networking site where you post what they call tweets, it gives you the ability to keep in touch with hundreds maybe thousands of people on a daily and sometimes hourly basis with current events and information. Twitter is also called a micro-blogging service that allows users to post short messages of text of not more than 140 characters or about 25 words and share them with your “followers”. Tweets can be posted via the web site, text messages from a cell phone or any of the various third-party applications designed to work with Twitter.

2. These messages are posted to your profile or your blog, sent to your followers, and are searchable on Twitter search. Twitter offers many ways to post updates, from the web in the update box, from your phone, from your mobile web browser using Twitter.com. After you click the follow button on someone’s profile, you’re following them. The follow button will change to a box that says “Following” with a drop down option to remove a person if you want to. See a list of people you’re following by clicking on the following link on your profile or your home page’s sidebar.

3. All you need to use Twitter is an internet connection or a mobile phone. To get an idea of what other people are saying or doing on Twitter you can search by keyword or just check out the trending topics to what’s hot on Twitter right now. If you’ve registered your phone with Twitter, you can set up text preferences for a person as well; Twitter sends you an email when someone new follows you.

4. What does it mean to follow someone on Twitter? Following someone simply means receiving their Twitter updates. When you follow someone, every time they post a new message, it will appear in your Twitter home page. Twitter offers other ways to follow people too: you can get updates from certain people on your phone. When you create an account, you can search for people by name or user name, import friends from other networks, or invite friends via email. Once you’ve found your friends or business associates, follow them to start getting their updates. New messages are added to your home page as people post them, so you always get the updates in real time. When you log in, you can see what the latest updates are.

5. Everyone can view your Twitter profile as it is public by default, if you’re hesitant to have strangers read your updates, you can protect your profile by selecting approved followers and keep your updates out of search. There are spammers on Twitter and it is encouraged for you to block them, and every one on Twitter will thank you for that. It is good to know that Twitter Support keeps an eye on block reports to see who is getting in trouble on Twitter.

6. Miscellaneous Twitter trivia: Oprah is now on Twitter and it is said she is posting her own Twitters; Ashton Kutcher became the first Twitter user to have one million followers; Twitter users can gather, meet and socialize while raising money for charity; it has been said that if they hear the word ‘Twitter’ one more time they are going to go virtual postal and the same goes for Tweet, Tweetted, Twittering and Tweeter; Britney Spears and many of your favorite celebrities are active Twitter members; why is there a star at the end of updates?. The star is a way for you to mark an update as favorite.

7. As in any social setting there are certain common courtesies and Twittiquete one should keep in mind; and on Twitter it is no different, some people take the “What are you doing?” question a little too literal, and also fill the site with 20 updates a day. Learn the etiquette on Twitter and be a fun and interesting Twitterer and find out how much great information is out there and what your favorite followers are doing without being obnoxious.

8. Last but not least, Twitter is great for marketing and finding information that is useful for your personal empowerment and/or improvement, this can include building your business and the use of vision mapping to manifest the business you intend to improve and/or develop into what you want for it to be. Vision mapping is a great visualization tool to manifest your hearts desires and the tool to use for this is Vision Map Videos, it is said that if you watch your video once a day for 30 days you will see every area of your life and/or business being created the way you visualize it.

If you haven’t joined the Twitter micro-blogging world, now is the time to start, but do beware, it can be addictive.

Domain names are special, self-sufficient part of WWW and a profit-making kind of business in the Internet.

There is a huge number of IT companies that sale/purchase/estimate domain names. The times when You could

get an exclusive free domain name from Your hosting-provider had passed. Now, in order to purchase a good

domain You may visit some of the websites that specialize in domain names sale (for example Sedo.com) and

buy the domain You liked (of course, if You are ready to pay about $10.000 for it, though, many of domain names

are much more expensive). If You are not – You will have to select domain name from those, which are being

sold as vacant. Here is what You should take into consideration while choosing a domain name:

1. Domain level.

It’s preferably to have a second-level domain name. For example, in “www.design.com” the “www” prefix means

World Wide Web; “design” is a domain basis (see below how to select it); “com” is a domain zone. Third-level

domain name is a little bit different – “www.logo.design.com”, forth-level domain will look like

“www.pixel.logo.design.com” – the number of domain components increases depending on its level. Domain

components imply words that affiliate a domain name and are separated by dots. The more components are

in a domain name, the higher is its level and the less valuable it is. The third and higher level domains are often

being distributed cost free. When purchasing a domain name for Your company (or Yourself), make sure it is a

second-level domain.

2. Domain zone.

There is a huge amount of domain zones, each of them having its own meaning, and it is important to choose the

most appropriate one. There are Generic Domains and Country Code Domains. Among Generic Domains are:

“com” – commercial project; “net” – network, related to WWW; “org” – organization; “biz” – business project; “info” -

informational project; “TV” – television channel; and many others. Country Code Domains are domains that reveal

ownership of a particular domain (website) by a country. Each country (including those that don’t already exist)

has its own domain zone. For example “us” means USA site; “de” is German; “co.uk” stands for Great Britain”,

“ru” refers to Russia; “fr” denotes France. So, what domain zone would give the best fit for Your domain? If Your

Internet project is going to have regional restrictions (for example e-shop meant for sale in USA only) – do not

hesitate to choose the domain zone of Your region. If Your project isn’t attached to a particular country, You will

have to choose from the “Great Five” of domain zones: com/net/org/biz/info. These zones are the most valuable

and popular in the Internet. “Com” is one of the best, being a universal domain zone. “Net” matches with IT

forums and sites related to domain names. “Org” suits perfectly to web directories. Almost all of the best great

directories have domains in “org” zone (dmoz.org; lii.org; vlib.org; botw.org). “Biz”- will be a brilliant solution for

e-shops and projects that have to do with online sale. “Info” is right for blogs and personal pages. But You don’t

have to be consistent with these meanings – they are conventional. Though, there are domains which You can’t

purchase without having a competent authority: “gov” – government establishment; “mil” – military department;

“edu” – educational establishment; “int” – international organization; “museum” – museums and so on.

3. Domain name basis.

Domain name basis is the most important domain component. Let’s emphasize 2 completely different methods

of selecting a successful domain name basis:

1) As a basis for a domain they use euphonic, well-remembered word that isn’t associated with company’s

activity, products or services. Such domains are often being called by company’s name. For example

Google.com and GoDaddy.com are remarkable, short domains that don’t have terms characterizing their

activities, like “search”, “host”, “domain”, “web”. They are figured on exclusiveness, brevity and memorability.

2) The second method comprises that domain name will consist of a term/terms relating to company’s (project)

activity. The terms here serve as keywords of a given site. For example “www.design.com” contains a keyword -

design. It is counted on to promote a domain in search engines. Some search engines (e.g. Google.com) take

domain name into account while giving search results. Domains of this kind stick to the memory without being

unique and may be easily found by entering them in a browser’s line. Such domain names are typical for purely

Internet projects.

4. Number of words in a domain.

The more words are in a domain name, the less valuable it is. And vice-versa – the less words it contains (ideally

one) the more value it represents. For example, “www.design.com” has one word – design. This word is

polysemantic to the maximum, because it can denote landscape design, interior design, web design, 3D design

and other notions relevant to design. Such domains are appreciated highly. “www.webdesign.com” consists of 2

words – web and design. The value of this domain is a little lower than that of the previous one, because it has

more narrow meaning that bounds its scope. “www.customwebdesign.com” includes 3 words – custom web

design, and is therefore still less valuable.

5. Brevity and memorability.

It doesn’t make sense to include more than 3 words in a domain name – its value and ability to stick to the

memory will decrease owing to the length. The shorter is a domain, the more precious it is. Short domains are

easily remembered, You can dictate them by telephone without difficulty, have them displayed as an

advertisement in public transport and be sure they will be noticed, etc.

6. No hyphens and digits.

Hyphens and digits degrade domain’s value. Exception to the rule are the cases when digits form an integral part

of a domain concept. For example “3D”, “mp3″, “formula1″.

7. Logical abbreviations.

Sometimes, in order to insert multipartite expression into a domain, they use abbreviations. But as far as

domains are concerned, they often do this incorrectly. For example, it’s necessary to apply “full flash web sites”

notion to a domain. To do this, they often abbreviate the expression, leaving only the initial letters of each word.

Based upon the received “ffws”, it’s impossible to understand what this domain means. It’s not being “read” by

search engines and is poorly remembered in spite of its brevity. That is to say, the given domain has more

drawbacks than advantages.

How to correctly abbreviate the expression like this? We should define its main idea/concept, which will serve as

a keyword of the future site. In our case it will be “full flash”. The rest of it -”web sites” is of minor importance, so

we can abbreviate it as “ws”. As the result, we have “www.FullFlashWs.com” domain. This domain has obvious

advantages when being promoted in search engines at “full flash” query, reasonably long and is not hard to

remember.

8. Domain’s first letter.

In itself the first letter of a domain name is of minor importance. But there are nuances that may have a beneficial

effect on popularization of a future site. The fact is that many of web directories have option to sort websites

alphabetically, and some of the directories have this option dissembled. Thus, the sites whose domain names

start with the first letters of alphabet are being visited much more frequently than the rest in a directory. This

factor should be taken into account when inventing a proper and brief domain name.

Finally, if You purchase a domain which is not new and has been in the Internet for some time, consideration

must be given to:

-Age of a domain name.

-Domain’s history, its scope in the past.

-Make sure that this domain doesn’t have punitive sanctions in search engines and its e-mail is not recognized as

a spam.

-Make sure that other companies/persons don’t make claims on this domain.

-PR and Alexa statistics of this domain.

RSS Basics and the Benefits of RSS

Posted by admin On July - 31 - 2009

RSS? Exactly what does it have to do with internet marketing?

You probably have seen RSS several times in the course of your internet surfing. What is RSS? RSS is a XML file format for syndicating content and news on the web. RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary; syndicating means republishing an article that comes from another source such as a website.

Simply stated, RSS is a means of publicizing updates about any website. It may or may not include a summary and/or photos of the latest posting. Other than plain text content, you can also add multimedia files, like videos or pictures. Those that do provide summaries (thus Rich Site Summary) allow any user to skim through the article so that they could decide later on if they want to access the website source. The RSS feed usually contains both the title of the actual update as well as the link to the website source.

How exactly does RSS work?

To be able to use RSS, you first have to download software (content management system), so that the XML format can be read. The title, and excerpt of the actual article, and a link to the full article are shown.

For users to access any particular RSS feed, they will need to use a feed reader or an aggregator or a of some type. An aggregator searches for updates on RSS-enabled webpages then displays it. It can either be a standalone application or a web browser type extension, depending on your operating system.

What exactly are the real benefits of RSS?

1. It gives you the latest updates as soon as it comes out.

2. It gives the power of subscription to the user.

3. It saves on surfing time by helping the surfer to decide on which items to prioritize when reading or browsing the net.

4. It can be used as a powerful advertising or marketing tool.

5. It cuts down on the clutter in your inbox.

6. It is spam free and since RSS does not make use of your email address to send updates your privacy is kept safe from spam mails.

7. Unsubscribing from an RSS feed is hassle-free.

What exactly are the drawbacks of RSS?

1. Since it is a new technology, many sites still do not support RSS.

2. Graphics and photos do not appear in all RSS feeds.

3. Some users prefer receiving email updates over an RSS feed.

4. Publishers cannot determine how many users are subscribed to their feed and the frequency of their visits.

5. RSS feeds create higher traffic and demands on the server.

6. The identity of the source website can be confusing.

How exactly do I start using RSS?

There are two things you need: an RSS feed and an RSS aggregator or reader. The RSS feed comes from an RSS-supported website. There are also websites that provide a list of RSS feeds of different websites. An RSS aggregator is what is used to read the RSS feed from the source website. It scans and collects data on latest RSS feeds from the worldwide web.

An aggregator comes in two types: a downloadable or online / web-based aggregators. Some aggregators may require payment, while some aggregators are free of charge. Both versions allow you to customize or choose which RSS feeds to enter. Paid aggregators are usually chosen by more experienced users and they usually allow more freedom in customizing feeds.

1. Choose an RSS aggregator to use. For beginners, web-based aggregators are usually recommended since they are usually very user-friendly

2. Look for the RSS or XML button on the website you are interested in. It contains the RSS code you need to enter in the aggregator. Copy this code. Syndic8 does provide a directory of several websites that support RSS.

3. Paste the code (which contains the URL of the website) in your aggregator. There is a space provided for pasting the code.

After you have done these three easy steps, you can start reading the RSS feeds coming from the website. New postings appear as they are published real time at the source website.

RSS and Internet Marketing

The original idea of RSS came from Netscape, where their intention was to provide a means for users to customize their personal homepage to contain links to websites that interested them. This is very similar in fact, to actually bookmarking websites.

RSS used in internet marketing was an unforeseen development to RSS technology developers. Today RSS is fast replacing email marketing and newsletters. Since users are given the freedom to add RSS feeds to their aggregators, those who are interested in particular products and services available in the internet can now be notified real time. Internet marketing now becomes much more specific to interested people and is no longer a hit-or-miss operation.

Anyone who intends to use RSS for marketing their own products or services should consider linking up with various email account providers, (e.g. Yahoo, MSN, Google mail); networking websites (e.g. Friendster, Multiply, My Space, Hi5); websites of various newspapers and television network websites (e.g. New York Times, CNN) for medium to large-scale companies.

Other ideas, check look into other networking websites as well as personal blog websites (e.g. Blogspot), club websites and organizations that would probably make use of their products or services e.g. a fishing supplies store can look for the website of their local fishing club for possible RSS marketing.

Clearly, RSS is an innovation in information management in the worldwide web as well as in online marketing. We can expect better RSS technology in the not-so-distant future as its popularity increases among users and website owners alike. RSS feeds can give your website a lot more traffic than through the usual web hosting. More web traffic coming to your web site means more a lot more people eventually seeing your products. Add basic strength to your online marketing strategy. Make RSS feeds to your site and be prepared to sell.

Podcasting Search Engine – The Good And The Not So Good

Posted by admin On July - 30 - 2009

It is much easier for search engines to index text blogs than podcasts or videoblogs. At present, search engines are using link text and the text surrounding the links to podcasts and videoblogs as a means to index their contents. The situation is admittedly a far cry from the ideal but the great strides being seen in the development of technologies towards the indexing of these mediacasts are very encouraging.
Podcasting in Relation to Search Engines
Podcasting is the method of distributing multi-media files over the Internet using either the RSS or atom-syndication formats, for playback on mobile devices and personal computers. This may include, but is not limited to, audio programs and music videos. Podcast can mean both the content and method of delivery while a podcaster is the host or author of a podcast.
The websites of podcasters may offer direct download or streaming of their files. A podcast usually features a single type of show with new episodes introduced regularly or sporadically, although there are podcast networks that feature multiple shows on the same feed. It can be downloaded automatically using software capable of reading RSS or atom feeds.
The term podcasting is technically a misnomer as it combines two words: iPod and broadcasting. It does not require an iPod or over-the-air broadcasting. The “pod” name association stemmed from the popularity of the iPod digital audio player during the time that podcasting began. A lot of other terms have been suggested for use but the term stuck and remained as such.
Like any other regular websites that aim to be found by searchers, search engines have much to contribute towards this end including podcasts. Podcast optimization can be achieved by promoting only one feed. Many podcasters commit the mistake of creating a podcast and then moving over to a different management system which entails promoting a new RSS feed. This usually results to a lot of different feeds for every podcast which may be disadvantageous in the long run.
Another way to get the most out of podcasts is by optimizing the audio file. The findability gap should be closed since a lot of people listen to a podcast on their computers as well as their MP3 players. A landing page can be optimized for each episode of the show as well as the category page. Subscription information that is very visible on the landing page is highly recommended.
Podcasters should also look into building correct and valid feeds with feed validation tools. Since iTunes do not redistribute, a separate feed must be built for it. Doing three separate feeds – a 2.0 feed, a media feed and an iTunes feed is ideal.
The inclusion of a transcript or summary depending on the podcast’s time span is needed. A landing page usually requires just a summary which is a well optimized page covering the podcast’s high points. Some search engines use speech-recognition to determine the relevancy of the podcast.
Quality podcasts may not be easy to find. This is especially true if the desired site is one that has already done the lifting for its searchers including podcast search engines, directories and round up sites. A huge variety of podcasts are available in a wide variety of genres.
The Podcasting Search Engines
Generally, major search engines are not indexing podcasts in a format that is easy to find. However, some podcast-specific search engines seem to have solved some of the problems. Podscope searches for the spoken words within the podcasts themselves. Yahoo! Podcasts is very user friendly and is one of the more consistent and useful in finding good podcasts. Singing Fish provides a whole ream of results by just typing in podcast or bring back audio results only when specified with the use of drop-down menus on the top left. Other worthy research engines includes Podzinger, Blinkx, BlogDigger and Lycos Audio Search.
Aside from search engines, podcast directories are virtual goldmines for finding good podcasts. The Podcast http://Alley.com includes the very useful Top Ten Podcasts of the Month as voted by listeners. The NPR Podcast Directory contains quality podcasts in a subject directory format. The http://Podcast.net categorizes podcasts of various subjects by tags which are available for free download. Podcast Bunker is likewise one of the best places to find quality podcasts on the web.
Search engines have become very useful especially to those who don’t particularly enjoy the search process. http://Podzinger.com allows the user to search podcasts in the same way as searching for anything else in the web. A word or phrase typed in will find relevant broadcasts and highlights the segment of the audio in which they occurred. It is not perfect but it serves the user’s need at this time. It works with a speech-recognition software which transforms audio into words. http://Podscope.com and Blinkx are sites that work in a similar way.
Podzinger and Blinkx are search engines that scour audio content for keywords by translating the audio into text and creating an index for quick searching. This is a step ahead of traditional search engines that can only identify keywords in a podcast’s Meta data such as the headline and introductory notes which describes the audio file’s general content.
Podzinger has officially ended its beta and lets users jump to the spot in a podcast where their search term appears. This is a welcome option to being forced to scan an entire program for pertinent parts such as with Blinkx. The design results to an uncluttered search page similar to those of Google. Podcasters can also link to a searchable index of their content in order to sell sponsored links to text in the index provided by Podzinger.
Both Podzinger and Blinkx include information about the source of the podcast as well as excerpts of text translated from the podcast. This comes with the added convenience of having relevant search terms highlighted. In this regard, Podzinger’s information is more extensive while allowing users to hear excerpts and determine its relevancy before downloading the entire podcast.
Podscope searches podcasts but scans only for sounds of syllable rather than full words. It has operated a keyword search engine for video and radio broadcast since 1999. By far, the Blinkx service is a bit more extensive as it scours thousands of podcast and offers search for 1 million hours of TV news video and the content of academic lectures.
The problem at hand for podcast search is the difficulty in finding what is really needed in podcasts. Relevant results cannot be attained without words thus the heavy reliance on speech recognition software that would help the public search for on-line video and radio content. Podcasts are a priority at this time due to popularity boom it is currently experiencing. The aim is to make the spoken word as searchable as the printed word.
