The Tulsa World Interviewed Me
How strange huh. I was contacted by the Tulsa World this week to do an interview about the social web service Twitter. They took my photo at a coffee shop of me using my cell phone posting to Twitter and asked some questions about how I use the service and such.
They said the article should be out sometime next week, so I'll post a clipping if I can get my hands on it.
SightMax is Serious Web Based Chat
I recently demo'd SightMax, a web based chat solution for websites to interact with their customers, at Panera bread last week and I was very impressed. Most web based chats I've seen are flaky and ridden with bugs, but SightMax is by far the best I've seen. If you are wanting a serious chat solution for your website then check it out.

MySpace Flash Workaround Hack
Last year MySpace was attacked by a flash based worm which caused MySpace to disable links from flash including getURL by appending the following properties to your object tag:
Yeah now that sucks. You say: "What do I do now? My cool flash widget I've spent so much time working on doesn't work properly in MySpace! Ahhh!!"
Enter the Hack
Now this isn't pretty and I don't like having to do this at all, but it works. The solution is to add a relatively positioned div that hovers on top of your flash with a transparent gif thats linked to the page you originally wanted to link to from your flash.
Example Code
-
<embed src="http://www.yourflashmovie.com/file.swf" width="221" height="334" wmode="transparent" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"></embed>
-
<div style="width: 90px; position: relative; top: -38px; left: 65px;">
-
</div>
Just set the size of the GIF to the size of the region you want to be linkable and position the div correctly over that region and voila...you have a MySpace flash workaround hack.
I've tested this in Firefox 2 and IE 7. Anyone care to test this in Safari 2?
Firefox Flash Bug UPDATE
This is an update to: http://www.findmotive.com/2006/10/02/firefox-flash-bug-update/
So far upgrading to Flash 9 and restarting Firefox has seemed to have fixed this issue. So far so good. I'll keep ya posted.
Flickr merging old logins with Yahoo ID
When I logged into my Flickr account today, I noticed a new message from flickr telling me to associate my account with a Yahoo ID. Of course I don't have a Yahoo ID, at least I didn't 10 minutes ago when I wasn't required to get a new login for my flickr account.
This will piss a lot of people off. I'm not mad, just annoyed. I like keeping the logins I have to remember to a bare minimum. I never use Yahoo, but since Yahoo owns flickr I guess I do now. Below is a comment from an old skool flickr user. You can read more remarks like the one below Here
I'm sure that the Flickr staff love their creation. But they love the big fat check that Yahoo gave to them much more. They didn't make Flickr as a labor of love, they made it hit the startup lottery (which they did, admirably I might add). That doesn't mean that they don't care about their creation, but don't kid yourselves into thinking that because you helped build it by being early adopters and advocates that they really care about you. This is clearly about money; saving money on maintenance, and making money off of advertising.
I need a new host
My sites are currently hosted with 1and1 which is pretty cheap when it comes to hosting, but their reliability is not the best. I've experienced very laggy servers and downtime with them lately. Anybody out there have a good managed or dedicated host they can recommend?
De-lurking Time
I got this idea from Garret Dimon. So leave a comment and let me know who you are, what you do, and where you are from, plus any other information you want to add!
