It’s the first half of “sem-neem” which translates loosely to “Mr.; or Mrs; or teacher (song-sem-nim) Used to formally address a person. If I said Kim-sem-neem, it would be like saying Mr. Kim.

  27. Big Blair says:

Sem is actually a toungue and cheek title. When people from the country say “Seon Seng Nim” they sometimes say it so unclearly that it sounds like “Sem”. Seon Seng Nim (선생님) literally means “person born before me” but is the word that Koreans use for Teacher, Missus, and Mister. Korean titles are always added after their name.

Nowadays, lots of Koreans use Sem and Seon Seng Nim interchangably to add a little bit of light humor to the conversation.

  28. higherground_pastor says:

sah – nim is an honorific

  29. Saezel =) says:

    It means Teacher.
For example, Choi Sem, means Tr.Choi.
    Hope it helped!
